Our Impact
At Empower Through Health, our mission is to bridge the gap in healthcare access for underserved communities. In the Buyende district, our health center has become a cornerstone of care, delivering vital health services to thousands.
Due to the low costs of providing healthcare in a region like Buyende, we are able to do this extremely cost-effectively: According to our health center data, a rough estimate suggests we saved around 30 lives in 2025 through a combination of our immunization, vitamin supplementation, and maternal care initiatives alone. With an annually operating budget for our health clinic of only $40,000, this means that saving a life at ETH costs only around $1,413, a number that is comparable with some of the most cost-effective charities in the world. Our mental health services, which are the only services of this type available in our region, are similarly extremely cost effective, with estimates placing this care at about $91 per Disability Adjusted Life Year (DALY). In Mpunde, mental health care was once an unimaginable resource. Before our intervention, there were no psychiatric services available, leaving individuals with severe mental illness and epilepsy without the treatment and medication they desperately needed. Stigma and lack of understanding further isolated those suffering, often leaving them and their families feeling hopeless.
That changed when Empower Through Health opened its doors to mental health treatment—a pioneering initiative in this underserved community. For the first time, Buyende residents gained access to a full-time psychiatrist offering comprehensive care, including medication.
The results have been life-changing:

5,159 patients with severe mental illness and epilepsy have been treated, giving them and their families renewed hope.

People once shunned due to stigma are now supported, with many regaining their independence and ability to contribute to their communities.
